I find that across both of my projects, I gained a lot of confidence in putting my opinions forward and taking charge of situations. This was through working with the theatre because I was translating their ideas into what they wanted to see on the screen. I also learnt how to do this through managing Ascendit and having a part in the final say. This will apply to my directing skills later on in my career, as being able to be in charge and take control of situations will be very useful while on set. I also found that I experienced different areas of media production, specifically theatre, marketing and fashion. I sat in lots of rehearsals and watched how the director talks to the actors, which was very useful as I learnt techniques such as how to get your actor in the head of the character they are playing, through asking them questions as if they are their character. Throughout all my projects I enjoyed working as a part of a team. It was very useful as I could always ask for help and get a second opinion, or was able to brainstorm to come up with ideas and bounce off each other to build upon them.
What I found didn’t work well was communication between the client and I. This led to me not being able to plan enough before shoots because I wasn’t fully sure on what they wanted. This could have been fixed by me asking more questions and creating a brief for myself so I would have something to stick to. I also found communication was an issue when trying to express how I felt about something, for example, when the first drafts of the Ascendit logo came out, I knew there was something wrong but couldn’t express what exactly I thought was wrong. To fix this, I took time to list what I liked and what I disliked. I found I was able to then give constructive feedback rather than just saying it’s not right. I also found it hard to find enough hours for my professional experience. I originally had a project but it didn't go forward and I was stuck looking for a project quite late.
Overall, I found getting my professional experience was very useful as it taught me a lot of skills that I can continue to use throughout my film career. It taught me how to overcome situations in a professional setting and how to take charge to create a great product. Although I found I struggled with communication, I was able to work on this through my projects.
